D17 Convention
Keynote presenter Olivia Schofield on Friday evening, Olivia with Earlybird Caleb, and Brad Hogg (Hoggy) with Caleb

The District 17 Toastmasters Convention was held at The Sebel, Mandurah, May 23-25 2014.

Our early bird Caleb, who competed at the Humourous Speech Contest didn’t place, but received some invaluable feedback and experience from this encounter.

Keynote presenter, Olivia Schofield, the only female in the Championship of Public Speaking in 2011, had everyone’s attention for a whole hour on Friday night as she regaled stories of her childhood to where she is today. She was an inspiration – her authenticity shone through, and serves as an example for Toastmasters everywhere to face our fears and get on with it. As part of her workshop on Saturday, Caleb received some direct feedback about his speech from Olivia, on and off stage.

We had the privilege of hearing from Mike Helm, who ran a workshop with all Toastmasters about their leadership style. We also heard from the ever popular Brad Hogg, who told us some of the inside goss of the WA and Australian cricket scene in the 90’s and 2000’s and his inspired comeback in the BBL in 2008.

Overall, the convention had some incredible moments of insight and learning for everyone, along with times of networking and catching up.

Onwards to Kalgoorlie for the 2015 convention!
