On Thursday 3 October 2019, Subiaco Early Birds hosted their club Humorous Speech and Table Topics contests.

It was my privilege to be the contest chair for both contests, and a massive shout out to Penny Spiers who did the bulk of the organisation for both contests.

We were also graced by Northern Division director, Souzy Theophilopoulos, who also acted as the chief judge.

For the first contest, Ellie Tighe delivered some fun facts on farts, Luke George regaled over the times he used to visit the VHS store and James Locke reminded us that it’s okay to embrace the awkward and cringy social mishaps.

James Locke came first and Luke George second, and if both are available, will be representing the club at the Area N24 contest to be held later in October.

As for the second contest – table topics – we had a record of five participants. In the time that I’ve been part of Subiaco Early Birds (since 2013), we’ve never had so many participants!

I posed the question, ‘if you could trade houses with someone, whose home would you choose’?

Challenging question right? However Ben Marsh, Luke George, Ellie Tighe, Nathan Wooten and Nick Buckley all answered valiantly and creatively on the spot.

Congratulations to Luke George, Ben Marsh and Nick Buckley who came first to third respectively and the top two will represent us at the Area N24 contest.

Place getters for the Table topics contest – Caleb Tan (contest chair), Luke George (1st), Nathan Buckley (3rd), Souzy Theophilopoulos (chief judge), Ben Marsh (2nd – missing)

One of our aims this year was to host a club contest and get as many members speaking competitively to accelerate their speaking skills and to create an environment that fosters good competition and higher stakes.

I feel we’ve achieved that in spades at this year’s contests. Well done everyone – it was a team effort!

Bring on the international and evaluation contests!
